The Tank Man video came from an assignment in fall of 2023. The goal was to represent the qualities of a given typeface through animation, as well as to describe its creation and inspirations. My video focuses on the typeface Tank Man.
Tank Man, designed by Tré Seals, is inspired by protest signs held by students before the Tiananmen Square Massacre. Being such a heavy subject, the biggest challenge was balancing the seriousness of the history with the energy of the type. Tank Man is sharp and authoritative, and I wanted to harness these aspects in the stark black and white color palette, changes in pacing, and a tense soundtrack.
